Turkey has hatched!

We hoped they wouldn’t hatch before Wednesday but with the hot weather the turkey chick decided he wanted out! Sheila sent this clip so we can see his efforts.

Early Maths

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We have introduced Maths support in the Junior Classes using the Ready Steady Maths , Numicon and Mata sa Ranga Programs whilst the support in the Senior Classes is mainly in problem solving.

The videos on this page were taken in Senior Infants and show the children playing Ready Steady Go Maths Games. These games have been devised for children to play as part of their number activities to help them develop and consolidate important ideas in number in a fun way. This program is being taught in Senior Infants with the help of the Learning Support Team. It is part of our Numeracy School Improvement Plan.

Guided Reading

Fountas and Pinnell 1996

The ultimate goal of Guided Reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies effectively.”

We now have guided reading running all year in every class from Senior Infants to 4th.

  • A teacher works with 4-8 students in each group
  • Leveled/banded readers and multiple copies of these readers are used
  • Children are grouped according to similarities in reading and development and instructional reading levels
  • Teacher introduces/consolidates strategies and concepts to support independent reading
  • Every child reads and is supported by teacher
  • At the same time another teacher works with small groups  to support writing while other groups work independently on teacher designed tasks.
  • Guided Reading sessions last for 40 minutes in 1st and take place 3/4 times a week, although not every group reads with the teacher each day.

The video shows  a similar model of guided reading.

The Guinness Book of World Records, which has just turned 60, holds the record for being one of the most frequently stolen books from public libraries in the United States. Since it was published on August 27th, 1955, the book of world records has brought the world’s heaviest people and the world’s tallest horses to more than 134 million people. The world’s best, worst and weirdest have had their achievements and afflictions written down in 21 languages in 100 countries. It is the bestselling annual book in the history of publishing.

In March 2014  nearly 1000 children and adults in our school dressed up as St Patrick and broke the Guinness World Record .
