Erin Mc Loughlin
Erin McLoughlin, Ireland International soccer player, spoke to the girls from 4th, 5th and 6th classes last Friday. She talked about her life growing up in Donegal, how she became involved in soccer and what she needed to do to become as successful as she is. She gave the girls great advice about training, playing different sports, competing, nutrition and having a good attitude. She also emphasised the importance of education. Hopefully, Erin will be selected for the upcoming World Cup so we will all be able to watch and cheer her on.
Local History Week begins!
Our Locality Week got off to a great start this morning when some 6th-class pupils visited classrooms to tell the children Monday’s Facts of the Day.
Here are today’s facts:
Did you know that:
1). Castleknock was once covered in a massive forest called the Great Scaldwood, where wolves roamed freely

2). Castleknock comes from the Irish Caisleán Cnucha – Cnucha was a woman who lived in the area long ago and Caisleán after the castle that the Normans built. The ruins of the castle are now in Castleknock College.

3). In Castleknock long ago, people lived in caves; they hunted wild deer and pigs in the forests. Nowadays, it’s much easier to get food. You just have to pop into Lidl.

4). The water from the nearby River Liffey was used for drinking, and people also fished there

5). There was once a Viking battle in Castleknock. The Vikings were fearsome warriors, and they won the battle and stayed in Castleknock for over 200 years….maybe your great-great-great-great-great- great-great-great Grandfather was a Viking!!
Room 34 began the class visits to our “new” old classroom in reception, and they enjoyed sitting at the old desks.
Senior Friends’ Day in 4th Class
The 4th class children had the pleasure of hosting Senior Friends’ Day last Friday. We welcomed grandparents and senior friends from near and far alongside members of the Castleknock Grandparents’ Association. The boys and girls had the opportunity to sing songs, recite poetry, show off their work and learn about what school was like in the past for our senior friends. The PTA kindly provided refreshments. This special day was a resounding success!

Enrolment for September 2023 closes at 3 pm on Monday, January 30th.
All parents who completed the expression of interest form will have received an email request for supporting documentation to be sent to us by January 30th.
This also applies to SIBLINGS of pupils already enrolled.

The Old School
Marathon Kids
It was a brilliant day for the 6th classes who did the final mile of the marathon kids programme in Russell Park. 26 miles run by everyone since taking up the challenge in September. We hope the children maintain and improve these fitness levels when they move on to secondary school!
Thanks to Mr. Lowery and to Marathonkids for the jerseys and medals and to St. Brigid’s GAA for the use of the all-weather pitch.
Catholic Schools Week: Friday
As Catholic Schools Week comes to a close, we are asked to think about how we walk together in hope. The world can be a scary place sometimes. We might feel afraid or worried for the future.
In our Catholic school, we learn that we are never truly alone, that God loves us and that our friends and teachers are there for us.
Together, as a school community that is kind and cares for each other, we look to the future with the hope and the joy of the resurrection.
Lord, help us to live like you taught us to. Together we pray the prayer that Jesus taught us:
Handball
St Brigid’s Handball Team played in the Dublin Schools Finals in Russell Park today. The children represented themselves and the school so well. We had 17 players competing at u11 and u13 age groups. In total 11 of the children won their competition and earned the right to represent Dublin Schools at the Leinster finals on Friday, 3rd February, in Carlow.
It was a fantastic day with great skills, determination, and athleticism on show from all that participated. Well done everyone on such a great performance and best of luck to those who play again next week.
